Cartesian Doubt Essay Example For Students

Cartesian Doubt Essay In his first reflection, Descartes sets out with stunning clearness and steadiness to free himself from each bogus thought that he has gained past to this, and figure out what he genuinely knows. To free him of these spoiled apples he has built up a technique for question with an objective to build an allowance of faith based expectations on establishments which are undeniable. On these establishments, Descartes applies three degrees of incredulity, which thus, produce three levels at which our considerations might be deluded by error.Descartes states expressly in the outline, that we can question everything which are material as long as we have no establishments for the sciences other than those which we have had up till now(synopsis:12). This suspicion likewise infers that uncertainty can liberate us from preferences, empowering the brain to get away from the trickery of the faculties, and conceivably find a reality which is certain. The first and fundamental misleading in Descarte s feeling has developed from sense perceptionWhat ever I have up till now acknowledged as most obvious I have obtained either from the faculties or throughthe sense. In any case, every once in a while I have discovered that the faculties hoodwink, and it is judicious never to trust totally the individuals who have beguiled us even once(1:1813).At the foundation of our convictions, Descartes contends, lie the encounters we gain from our senses, because these are at times mixed up, as on account of illusions or articles which show up little out yonder, and due to this he will presently relinquish the entirety of his most dependable data . All the more significantly it might be to follow in the means of Plato and require information that is sure and outright ( Prado 1992 ). This contention comprises of four primary premises:1. All that he has acknowledged as obvious as yet, he has obtained by the faculties or Cartesian Doubt32. be that as it may, once in a while these faculties have bee n misleading. 3. It is insightful not to believe whatever has been deluding in the past4. In this way, it is conceivable to be mixed up about everything. In premise one his convictions are gotten from the faculties, for example, he sees that he has a paper in his grasp and infers that it is a paper, and what is implied by through the faculties, is that his convictions may have been founded on others sense understanding. All Descartes requires for the subsequent reason is the likelihood that he may have been bamboozled, for in the event that he can't conclude which isn't right, than he should not have any information. This prompts the third reason where it appears at any rate sensible to accept, that in the event that one has been bamboozled beforehand, there is noabsolute affirmation that it is by and by right. Thusly, there is an opportunity of being hoodwinked about everything. In any case, numerous pundits will contend that few of these bogus percepts can be rectified by methods for elective detects, for example, he bowed stick in water model. In spite of the fact that our sight might be fooled into feeling that the hallucination e xists, by utilizing the feeling of touch we can address this wrongness, and reveal what genuinely exists. Descartes does withdraw, and survey the harm from his first level by saying, there are numerous different convictions about which uncertainty is very inconceivable, despite the fact that they are gotten from the faculties for instance, that I am here, sitting by the fire, wearing a winterdressing outfit.. (1:1812). Here even he items to the legitimacy of his contention, regardless of whether he could be hoodwinked about anything he sees, this doesn't meanthat he is misdirected about everything. Because his faculties are temperamental on occasion isn't confirmation enough that everything on the planet is bogus (Williams 1991). Notwithstanding being hallucinating, Descartes accepts we can be deceived by frenzy or craziness. Since the individuals who are crazy may decipher things detachedfrom reality by methods for their faculties, how might it be denied that these hands or this entire body are mine? Except if maybe I were to compare myself to crazy people, the tireless fumes of despondency (1:19 13), they in truth accept these percepts to be valid. In spite of the fact that Descartes proceeds to state such individuals are crazy, and I would be thought similarly frantic in the event that I accepting anything from them as a model for myself, and proceeds by comparing the fantasies he has to the encounters a psycho faces when wakeful. From here Descartes makes a more grounded contention for raising doubt about his good judgment convictions, the likelihood that he may be dreaming, that each feeling and each sense observation appears to him just in a fantasy. Since there is consistently a likelihood that we may in actuality be dreaming, this theory is done to incite his confidence as a general rule and the faculties, to get the outright assurance of how things may show up or feel (Prado 1992). His view on this is taken from the way that when dreaming, similar sorts of mental states and sentiments are available as when we are wakeful, How frequently, sleeping around evening time , I am persuaded of simply such a recognizable occasion thatI am here in my robe, sitting by the fire-when in certainty I am lying uncovered in bed (1:1913). Since there is no total path in deciding the waking state from the dreaming state, with regards to detect understanding, we are no happier alert than sleeping. Consequently our judgment must be suspended in any event, when we are certain that our state is that of waking since we obviously have no motivation to accept that impacts take after their causes in the waking state, since they unmistakably don't in the dreaming state (Prado, 1992). The main way we can keep away from the suspension of judgment is just on the off chance that we have a standard to figure out where reality exists (Williams 1986).To utilize the contention of the stick being twisted in water, what sense is it that we ought to accept, when we have no apparatus to translate reality? Along these lines, the suspension of truth works for the uncertainty of he faculties too. The motivation behind why questioning the faculties isn't sufficient to base a totally new arrangement of thoughts, is because of the way that it doesn't raise doubt about all of ones good judgment convictions, for the portrayals found in dreams are gotten from genuine items, albeit perhaps organized in an alternate way. The musings and sentiments of a fantasy are genuine, they are similar considerations and emotions that happen each day in the waking state. To be apprehensive during a fantasy is a similar inclination experienced if . It is because of the likenesses in emotions and thought among dreaming and waking, that Descartes can discover ground for question, there are never a definite signs by methods for which being wakeful can be recognized from being snoozing (1:1913). This than prompts the interminable incredulous inquiry : How would i be able to tell whether as of now I am alert or sleeping? (Malcolm, 1967).If we take any arrangement of contemplations, feelings or sentiments, it is conceivable that a similar arrangement can happen while dreaming or wakeful. Along these lines, we can never be completely clear on whether what we are encountering at that definite second in time is a fantasy, or that of a waking state. In spite of the fact that Prado (1992) demands that Descartes states in the 6th contemplation, that worldly intelligibility permits us to decode between the waking and dreaming states. The point here then is demonstrate that there is nothing in the waking state to affirm the precision of sense understanding. The way that at some random second our present state could change radically and render the past express a fantasy, might be sufficient to help his wary nature on along these lines, his second degree of uncertainty (Williams 1991). For whatever length of time that Descartes second degree of uncertainty is acknowledged, we can proceed to his third degree of uncertainty, or what is known as hyperbolical question. Descartes considers our convictions inside dreams when he says that a few convictions stay unquestionable while others are cleared away by creative mind. Such things as the laws of material science can be broken inside dreams, where different ideas, for example, number juggling or geometry remain unchanged:physics, cosmology, medication and every single other order which rely upon the examination ofcomposite things, are far fetched; while number-crunching, geometry ans different subjects of this kind, which manage the least complex and most broad things, whether or not they reallyexist in nature or not, contain something certain and undeniable. (1:2014)He concludes that specific things which are acknowledged all around, for example, arithmetic, are undeniable. The fantasy theory isn't sufficient to uncertainty such things as science, as we might be dreaming that there seems a square before us, however we can't question our explanation, with the end goal that it has four sides, or that there is just one square that we see and not a few. He proceeds onward to examine the sources of our convictions, and the job of a transcendent God. He accepts that there is a God, because of the way that this thought of God is immovably established in his brain, and he additionally accepts that this all-powerful God would not bamboozle him since he is especially acceptable. He inspects the supposition that God is great and all-powerful, and thusly the hotspot for the entirety of our contemplations and thoughts. Since Descartes is surrendering the entirety of his old convictions, this would propose that God attempted to trick him. He asks why such an ideal God would beguile him, and figures it must be far fetched. Cartesian Doubt7Now Descartes envisions that God isn't the person who is deluding him, however as a matter of fact a pernicious evil presence, who with misleading force, embeds deceptions, I will assume in this way that not God, who is remarkably acceptable and the wellspring of truth, yet rather some malignant devil the ver y pinnacle of intensity and sly has utilized every one of his energies so as to misdirect me (1:2215). While figuring out what is available to question, Descartes malicious evil presence speculation helpfully makes a being who is transcendent and who utilizes the force exclusively to deceive. What Descartes accomplishes is making dangerous a large group of thoughts he engages as results of reason , contradicted to results of the faculties, which the fantasy theory deals with (Prado 1992). Despite the fact that L.G. Mill operator (1992) recommends that the suggestions of arithmetic endure the observation and dream contentions, yet just to be disrupted by the swindler God theory

A Short Diary of our History - Term Paper Example The characterizing occasion in the nineteenth Century of American history was the extension of westbound. At the end of the day, it was not the basic story of â€Å"Empire of Liberty†. I am of the view that refered to extension in 60 years after the acquisition of Louisiana in truth pulverized the Republic sooner than it was normal (Foner 63). Following one hundred and fifty years of common war, number of Americans accused common war of subjugation. It didn't really mean to target explicit portion of the general public. The common war gave American individuals an opportunity to confront servitude as an issue strikingly (Foner). In my own view, subjugation around the world all in all and explicitly in the cutting edge world caused a stir about the standards of an acculturated society. This helps me the time to remember free exchanging of slaves in the Roman Empire, which was around then thought to be a socialized country among the comity of country. The Industrial Revolution, which spread more than fifty years, assumed a key job toward financial my turn of events. I think of it as an extraordinary change as far as transformation of hand sewed creation to machine made creation in the processing plant premises. The turning and weaving machines, which were worked through the intensity of water exchanged over to steam power. This truly helped me in boosting modern development. Further, there can be no distinction of assessment among the designers of American economy that it has changed the American culture and economy revolutionarily (Foner 107). Aside from different economies associated with the First World War, the war being referred to demonstrated surprisingly positive developments for me and the American individuals as far as fast development of their economy. I can say that referenced War expanded numerous chances of work, compensation for us other than attractive benefits to the indigenous business. Do you need to include a legal analysis? Or do you need to make sure that you include information about the history of immigration into the United States? The history of immigration to the United States can include a lot of information about American immigration policy, including how many immigrants have come to the country in general, h ow many came here as refugees, how many came here as criminals and how many came here to legally immigrate. Definition and Examples of Conversational Implicature

In pragmatics, conversational implicature is  an indirect or implicit speech act: what is meant by a speakers utterance that is not part of what is explicitly said. The term is also known simply as implicature; it is the antonym (opposite) of explicature, which is an explicitly communicated assumption. What a speaker intends to communicate is characteristically far richer than what she directly expresses; linguistic meaning radically underdetermines the message conveyed and understood, says L.R. Horn in The Handbook for Pragmatics. Example Dr. Gregory House: How many friends do you have?Lucas Douglas: Seventeen.Dr. Gregory House: Seriously? Do you keep a list or something?Lucas Douglas: No, I knew this conversation was really about you, so I gave you an answer so you could get back to your train of thought. – Hugh Laurie and Michael Weston, Not Cancer, an episode of the TV show House, M.D. 2008 Inferences The probabilistic character of conversational implicature is easier to demonstrate than define. If a stranger at the other end of a phone line has a high-pitched voice, you may infer that the speaker is a woman. The inference may be incorrect. Conversational implicatures are a similar kind of inference: they are based on stereotyped expectations of what would, more often than not, be the case. – Keith Allan, Natural Language Semantics. Wiley-Blackwell, 2001 Origin The term [implicature] is taken from the philosopher H.P. Grice (1913-88), who developed the theory of the cooperative principle. On the basis that a speaker and listener are cooperating, and aiming to be relevant, a speaker can imply a meaning implicitly, confident that the listener will understand. Thus a possible conversational implicature of Are you watching this programme? might well be This programme bores me. Can we turn the television off? – Bas Aarts, Sylvia Chalker, and Edmund Weiner, Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar, 2nd ed. Oxford University Press, 2014 Conversational Implicature in Practice Generally speaking, a conversational implicature is an interpretive procedure that operates to figure out what is going on...Assume a husband and wife are getting ready to go out for the evening: 8. Husband: How much longer will you be?9. Wife: Mix yourself a drink. To interpret the utterance in Sentence 9, the husband must go through a series of inferences based on principles that he knows the other speaker is using...The conventional response to the husbands question would be a direct answer where the wife indicated some time frame in which she would be ready. This would be a conventional implicature with a literal answer to a literal question. But the husband assumes that she heard his question, that she believes that he was genuinely asking how long she would be, and that she is capable of indicating when she would be ready. The wife...chooses not to extend the topic by ignoring the relevancy maxim. The husband then searches for a plausible interpretation of her utterance and concludes that what she is doing is telling him that she is not going to offer a particular time, or doesnt know, but she will be long enough yet for him to have a drink. She may also be saying, Relax, Ill be ready in plenty of time. – D. G. Ellis, From Language to Communication. Routledge, 1999 The Lighter Side of Conversational Implicature Jim Halpert: I dont think Ill be here in 10 years.Michael Scott: Thats what I said. Thats what she said.Jim Halpert: Thats what who said?Michael Scott: I never know, I just say it. I say stuff like that, you know—to lighten the tension when things sort of get hard.Jim Halpert: Thats what she said. – John Krasinski and Steve Carell, Survivor Man, an episode of the TV show, The Office, 2007

The Sexual Double Standard Gender Roles - 1526 Words

Danielle Davidson English 150 Fall 2014 Ho Lot Of Stigma: The Sexual Double Standard Gender roles are social constructs that defines what sort of behaviors are acceptable for men or women. These rigid expectations teach people through socialization that we should think, speak, dress, and be a certain way depending on which gender we are. When we are young we learn the behaviors that are socially appropriate for males and females; these behaviors are often based on gender stereotypes. For example, women are expected to love shopping and take care of domestic duties like cleaning the house, while men are expected to love sports and to work outside the home in an industry like construction or engineering. While men and women do have distinct differences that can t always be chalked up to social imposition, these ideas of what it means to be male or female can be very harmful to people s identity. People are often judged and scrutinized for failing to fit into the box society creates for them based on their gender. There are quite a few double standards that exist regarding gender. It is unfair to judge people more harshly for something based solely on their gender, and one common example of this is sexual behavior. Women are judged harshly for the same sexual behavior that men are praised for. This sexual double standard can have devastating effects on women who get labeled as â€Å"sluts.† Men who are thought to have a higher number of sexual partners or be more sexuallyShow MoreRelatedHow Men and Women Are Perceived According to Their Gender844 Words   |  3 Pagesoccur based on ones gender and have been shaped over hundreds of years and have shown what is deemed acceptable for one gender is not always acceptable for the other. Cetacea Order Essays - Megafauna, Cetaceans, Cetacea, Whale

Cetacea Order Whales, dolphins and porpoises make up the classification order Cetacea, which contains two suborders, Mysticeti and Odontoceti. The baleen whales are members of the Mysticeti suborder, while the toothed whales, dolphins and porpoises make up the suborder Odontoceti. Altogether, the two suborders contain eighty-one known species, separated into thirteen different families. In each family are a number of species, each classified further into 'sub-families', or genera, of which there are 40. What Are Cetaceans? There are many misconceptions about cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), the most common of which is the idea that cetaceans are fish. They're not - they are mammals, like you and me. Millions of years ago, they lived on land; their bodies were covered in hair, they had external ears, they walked on four legs, they beared live young. As mammals, cetaceans have these characteristics that are common to all mammals: * They are warm-blooded animals. * They breathe in air through their lungs. * They bear their young alive and suckle them on their own milk. * They have hair - though generally only a few 'whiskers'. Another way of discerning a cetacean from a fish is by the shape of the tail. The tail of a fish is vertical and moves from side to side when the fish swims. The tail of a cetacean is horizontal and moves up and down instead. The Cetacean's Adaptations for Sea Life Over a period of millions of years, the cetacean returned to the sea - there was more food there, and more space than on land. Because of this increase in space, there was no natural limit to the cetacean's size (i.e. the amount of weight its legs could hold) since the water provided buoyancy. It had no longer any need for legs. During this time, the cetacean lost the qualities that fitted it for land existence and gained new qualities for life at sea. Its hind limbs disappeared, its body became more tapered and streamlined - a form that enabled it to move swiftly through the water. For the same reason, most of its fur disappeared, reducing the resistance of the giant body to the water. The cetacean's original tail was replaced by a pair of flukes that acted like a propeller. As part of this streamlining process, the bones in the cetacean's front limbs fused together. In time, what had been the forelegs became a solid mass of bone, blubber and tissue, making very effective flippers that balance the cetacean's tremendous bulk. After the cetacean's hair disappeared, it needed some way of preserving their body heat. This came in the form of blubber, a thick layer of fat between the skin and the flesh that also acts as an emergency source of energy. In some cetaceans the layer of blubber can be more than a foot thick. Breathing, Seeing, Hearing and Echolocation Since the cetacean is a mammal, it needs air to breathe. Because of this, it needs to come to the water's surface to exhale its carbon dioxide and inhale a fresh supply of air. Naturally it cannot breathe under water, so as it dives a muscular action closes the blowholes (nostrils), which remain closed until the cetacean next breaks the surface. When it does, the muscles open the blowholes and warm air is exhaled. To make this easier, the cetacean's blowholes have moved to the top of its head, giving it a quicker chance to expel the stale air and inhale fresh air. When the stale air, warmed from the lungs, is exhaled it condenses and vapourises as it meets the cold air outside. This is rather like when you breathe out on a cold day and a small cloud of warm air appears. This is called the 'blow', or'spout', and each cetacean's blow is different in terms of shape, angle and height. This is how cetaceans can be identified at a distance by experienced whalers or whale-watchers. The cetacean's eyes are set well back and to either side of its huge head. This means that cetaceans with pointed 'beaks' (such as dolphins) have good binocular vision forward and downward, but others with blunt heads (such as the Sperm Whale) can see either side but not directly ahead or directly behind. The eyes shed greasy tears which protect them from the salt in the water, and cetaceans have been found to have good vision both in the water and out. Akin to the eyes, the cetacean's ears are also small. Life in the sea accounts for the

How to Use the 5 Relative Pronouns in Adjective Clauses

How to Use the 5 Relative Pronouns in Adjective Clauses An adjective clause  (also called a relative clause) is a group of words that works like an adjective to modify a noun  or noun phrase.  Here well focus on the five relative pronouns that are used in adjective clauses. An adjective clause usually begins with a relative pronoun: a word that relates the information in the adjective clause to a word or a phrase in the main clause. Who, Which, and That Adjective clauses most often begin with one of these three relative pronouns: whowhichthat All three pronouns refer to a noun, but who refers only to people and which refers only to things. That may refer to either people or things. Here are a few examples, with the adjective clauses in italics and the relative pronouns in bold. Everyone turned and looked at Toya, who was still standing  behind the counter.Charlies old coffee machine, which hadnt worked in years, suddenly started to gurgle and splutter. The ticking sound was coming from the little box that was sitting on the windowsill. In the first example, the relative pronoun who refers to the proper noun Toya. In sentence two, which refers to the noun phrase Charlies old coffee machine. And in the third sentence, that refers to the little box. In each of the examples, the relative pronoun functions as the subject of the adjective clause. Sometimes we can omit the relative pronoun from an adjective clauseas long as the sentence still makes sense without it. Compare these two sentences: The poem that  Nina chose was We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks. The poem Ø Nina chose was We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks. Both sentences are correct, though the second version may be considered just a little less formal than the first one. In the second sentence, the gap left by the omitted pronoun (identified by the symbol Ø)  is called a  zero relative pronoun. Whose and Whom Two other relative pronouns used to introduce adjective clauses are whose (the possessive form of who) and whom (the object form of who). Whose begins an adjective clause that describes something that belongs to or is a part of someone or something mentioned in the main clause: The ostrich, whose wings are useless for flight, can run faster than the swiftest horse. Whom stands for the noun that receives the action of the verb in the adjective clause: Anne Sullivan was the teacher whom Helen Keller met in 1887. Notice that in this sentence Helen Keller is the subject of the adjective clause, and whom is the direct object. Put another way, who is equivalent to the subject pronouns he, she, or they in a main clause; whom is equivalent to the object pronouns him, her, or them in a main clause.

PCS would be calculated on the following:  To practically calculate the cost of nursing care, I referred to an orthopedic unit, which had 12 patients who were at different situations and had different acuity levels. PCS would be calculated on the following:  Ã¢â‚¬ ¢ 4 patients were in a condition to be discharged and had acuity level 1: 4 X 1= 4.†¢ 4 patients were under therapy and had acuity level 4: 4 X 4= 16.†¢ 4 patients were under regular had acuity level 2: 4 X 2= 8.This total of 28 hours would be expanded by adding further 48 hours of an 8-hour shift for 8 patients who did not discharge in 8 hours which makes a total of 76 hours. This grand total of 76 hours can be used to determine Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) for a unit. However, this formula does not give an accurate value because it does not have space for variances made according to situations. For instance, if a patient was acquiring 2 hours and later demands 3 hours due to some uncertainty in patient’s condition. The cost is still being evaluated for 2 hours and thus giving 3 hours till the patient get stable. To neutralize these differences, Relative Value Unit as an index number is given to each unit based on the amount of resources which can be managed to produce nursing care.  For instance, $1,250,000 is given to a unit which has total RVUs of 5,196.50.... 4 patients were under therapy and had acuity level 4: 4 X 4= 16. 4 patients were under regular had acuity level 2: 4 X 2= 8. This total of 28 hours would be expanded by adding further 48 hours of an 8 hour shift for 8 patients who did not discharge in 8 hours which makes a total of 76 hours. This grand total of 76 hours can be used to determine Full Time Equivalent (FTE) for a unit. However, this formula does not give an accurate value because it does not have space for variances made according to situations. For instance if a patient was acquiring 2 hours and later demands 3 hours due to some uncertainty in patient’s condition. The cost is still being evaluated for 2 hours and thus giving 3 hours till the patient get stable. To neutralize these differences, Relative Value Unit as an index number is given to each unit based on amount of resources (labor and capital) which can be managed to produce nursing care (Kelly, 2008). For instance $1,250,000 is given to a unit which has total RVUs of 5,196.50. The amount will be divided by RVU’s to bring out the cost per RVU. For instance $1,250,000/ 5,196.50 = $ 240.55 per RVU. Thus the cost of one patient of level 4 acuity will be $ 240.55 X 4= $962.2 for one day. This formula of calculating the nursing cost does not either gives an exact cost because situations can vary and can demand excess resources. Thus there is no accurate calculation system to recognize exact nursing cost. It all depends on the acuity level which itself is not certain but varies according to patients conditions. These results can help outline the nursing care budget which is helpful to envision all pro’s and con’s to later deal with the finances affectively (Kelly, 2008). Dq2#2)

Teen Moms Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Teen Moms - Term Paper Example It is quite evident from the available literature that the incidents of adolescents giving birth have been increasing. The biological and economic consequences of teenage pregnancy and parenthood have been largely studied. However, these conclusions confirming its negative impacts have to a large extent influenced the social perception on teenage mothers. It has been established that both the mothers and children in the discussed population are underprivileged due to various reasons. As motherhood limits their scope of further education, resultantly hindering their access to good employment, the chances of these mothers remaining underprivileged is large. Thus the inherent consequences of teen motherhood remain to be same across generations. Wiemann, Rickert, Berenson, & Volk (2005) confirms this argument as they observe that despite the increased visibility of teen mothers and unmarried teen pregnancy, the social stigma around ten mother are significant. Interestingly, there are opi nions which connect to the reciprocal effect of this stigmatization. This school of thought suggests that stigmatization would ultimately result in the positive consequence of reduced teen pregnancies. However, the implications that this futuristic philosophy can have on the present generation of the target population is overseen. In other words, the teen mothers will be socially marginalized. This in no sense is justified in a civilized society. There are several researches which suggest that this stigmatization add to the challenges which they are going through due to their underprivileged social context. A very important factor that has to be considered while understanding the larger social effects posed upon teen mothers is their perception of the societal attitude towards them. The aspect of stigmatization has to be considered in this respect. It has been

Mission & Vision Essay Example for Free

Mission Vision Essay The article speaks about how a mission should be written, so it will provide a clearer and well defined purpose. It’s explained the advantages and limitations of having it. It also explore whether a standalone statement or a broader model should be a better mission statement. This is followed by proposing a new definition of a mission, demonstrating how it is rooted in good practice, and presenting its benefits and limitations. Some context of practical implication discussed as well. Findings The paper initially shows the inconsistent use of the concept of mission in the expanded list approach. It then proceeds to show similar inconsistencies in three of the most respected models of guiding statements in the literature. Vision Framework (Collins and Porras (1991, 1995, 1996, and 1997) Ashridge Mission Model (Campbell and Yeung (1991)) Model of organizational vision –Liptons Model (Lipton’s (1996, 2003)) Mission Statements Approaches Check List Type: The article says that to get a well-defined mission statement, it has to have the checklist-type approach. Research shows that many times companies are only setting a single line of mission statement which does not constitute all the items in the checklist which makes it a poor mission statement. This is where suggestions are being made to the organizations to redefine the mission statement  by David and David (2003), They suggest the following comprehensive list of nine components that an effective mission statement should include: Customers (the target market) Products/services (offerings and value provided to customers) Geographic markets (where the firm seeks customers) Technology (the technology used to produce and market products) Concern for survival/growth/profits (the firm’s concern for financial soundness) Philosophy (the firm’s values, ethics, beliefs) Public image (contributions the firm makes to communities) Employees (the importance of managers and employees); Distinctive competence (how the firm is different or better than competitors). Compilation Logic: Variously referred to as statements of purpose, values statement, goals and strategies, corporate creed, corporate philosophy, and so on. (Leuthesser and Kohli (1997,). A mission statement is a clear definition of the mission and purpose of the organization, it may be referred to as the organization creed statement, statement of purpose, statement of general principles, statement of corporate intent or vision statement. † (Strong (1997, p. 269)) Strategic Intent: â€Å"Strategic intent captures the essence of winning† (Hamel and Prahalad, 1989, p. 64). An effective mission statement basically answers one question: How do we intend to win in this business? † Welch and Welch (2005, p. 14). Brief on the Model Vision Framework: In vision framework, a well-conceived vision consist of 2 major parts. Those are core ideology and envisioned future. The core ideology speaks about the purpose of the organization. It consists of explaining the character of the organization, what it stands for and why it exists. The 2 parts of core ideology are core values and core purpose. Core values are the principals of the organization and core purpose is the fundamental reason of the organization existence. The envisioned future is what the organization would like to achieve. Ahihridge model: In Ashridge model, the mission statement should consist not only the purpose but also the strategy, values and standards of behavior. The purpose in this context reflects as to who the organization is on business for. The strategy part speaks about the business logic on saying which business brings the competitive advantage while the values speak of the emotional and moral logics which eventually motivate the employees. The standards of behavior will convert the strategy and values into policies and guidelines. Liptons Model: Lipton’s model speaks of 3 components. Those are mission, strategy and culture. The mission specifies the fundamental and unique purpose of the business. The strategy is about how the mission can be achieved while obtaining the competitive advantage of the business. The culture is the part which describes the values, standards of behavior and leadership style of the organization Differences of 3 Model The â€Å"Ashridge† model emphasizes the importance of a â€Å"sense of mission† and Lipton talks about a â€Å"sense of vision. In both models can see purpose, strategy, values, and standards of behaviors. However the vision model comprises of vision and mission elaborated both other 2 models. The contents of those elements, however, are not always the same. Proposed Definition The proposed definition of mission statement should consist of 3 things. Those are, commitment to reflect authenticity of the mission, a significant value which is exciting and inspiring and a worthy cause for the members of the organization to embrace on. This new definition aims to provide benefits are individual and organization level. Two benefits can be derived and those are to create a clear focus for the employees and it helps organizations to make strategic decision in regards to resources which help the success of the business. Strength Drawback Analysis The variety of organizations’ mission statements is so wide that no single definition can possibly be exhaustive. There are authentic and fabricated mission statements, and not all existing varieties are necessarily authentic. This definition, by design, excludes all those varieties of mission statements that are not authentic, i. e.  that imply no particular choice. The proposed definition reverses the logic of compilation and synthesis in favor of a more focused approach. Evidently, a definition built on choice can never be exhaustive. Limitation Direction for future Research The paper, however, focusses mainly on content and does not thoroughly address the process of developing a mission and how this process relates to and influences the mission ’s content. This is a fruitful research opportunity. Observation Mission statement framework should include some components to measure the organizational outcomes.

Sept 11 2001 Attacks and Cover Up Essay -- essays research papers

Sept 11 2001 Attacks Throughout history there have occurred many tragic events. On Sept. 11, 2001 an unforgettable event occurred, and will be remember throughout the ages of the United States history. On the tragic day of 9/11 a day that will be unforgettable, the unthinkable happened. The terror stuck the heart of New York City, two planes crashed into the world trade center and total chaos occurred, and lives where lost, and many injured. The terror didn’t end there, other plane hit The Pentagon. Thousands of lives were lost in a single morning, people scatter for help and to be saved, and some died trying to save them. On the morning of September 11, 2001, nineteen terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. Each team of hijackers included a trained pilot. The hijackers crashed two of the airliners (United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 11) into the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane into each tower and resulting in the c ollapse of both buildings soon afterward. A nearby church and the rest of the World Trade Center complex's 7 buildings were also destroyed or damaged beyond repair. A third airliner (American Airlines Flight 77) was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. Passengers and members of the flight crew on the fourth aircraft (United Airlines Flight 93) attempted to retake control of their plane from the hijackers, that plane crashed into a field near the town of Shanks Ville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania. In addition to the 19 hijackers, 2,973 people died, another 24 are missing and presumed dead. But I think there’s more behind the story. Despite their claims of having been taken unawares and with complete surpr... ...ely following 9/11, and after he emerged from hiding, President Bush lavishly praised his accomplices in the FBI and warned off those who might dare to question or criticize the agency. Moreover, although he had grounded all commercial and private jets, he made one critical exception: The bin Laden family, with whom he and his father had personal and financial ties, were allowed to escape questioning and the U.S. and to fly back to Saudi Arabia. Both President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney also began threatening those who were suggesting that the events leading up to 9/11 should have been anticipated, and both Bush and Cheney urged Senate and House Republican leaders and Democratic Majority Leader Tom Daschle to block any investigation into the events of Sept. 11. The cover up began well before 9/11. The cover up continues to this day.

Issues and Trends

Running head: VALUE CHAIN ISSUES Issues and Trends in the Global Value Chain Darryn Urueta University of Phoenix ISCOM 383 Pamela Harris December 5, 2011 Issues and Trends in the Global Value Chain Global trends are changing on a seemingly daily basis. Global economies are weakening and some companies are discouraged by the condition of terror threats that are occurring. These threats are changing the spending behavior of the average customer. Not only is the customer not purchasing because of the economy, but businesses face the threat of shipments not being secure or not arriving in a timely manner. To lower cost, and increase benefits, the lean Six Sigma approach will benefit companies by improving strategies and tactics. Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism will help to reduce terror threats. The goals set forth by the Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism will have a significant, positive effect on ports across the globe. The training process will ensure the knowledge needed to protect the supply chain for all countries. Lean Six Sigma Competition for global companies is great in today’s worldwide market. With the popularity and ease of access to the internet, anyone can create an online company for the world to see. Lean Six Sigma can create an environment that can enhance the strategy of competition. According to Carreira and Trudell, â€Å"Lean Six Sigma is a combination of the best features of Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing. Six Sigma is an integrated, disciplined approach for improving processes by understanding and controlling variation, which results in an improvement in the predictability of business processes. The basic values of Lean manufacturing include high quality, low cost, short cycle times, flexibility, the continuous pursuit to eliminate waste, and customer-defined value. While the classic tools of Lean address process definition, high materials velocity, and balance, the tools of Six Sigma address data-driven variation reduction† (Lawson, 2007). Lean causes products to move through processes faster, and Six Sigma improves quality, so integrating the two complementary methodologies can yield even greater benefits than implementing them separately. Some companies find this process too complex to integrate into their system. These companies believe that the process of combining the two strategies would create confusion thereby unwillingness for employees to comply. The Lean Six Sigma approach can help any company lower its costs, improve the quality of its output, and increase its profits as it transforms into a more competitive organization. â€Å"By integrating the Lean principle of a system-wide analytical view; for example, the value stream, the total cycle of activities needed to produce a product or service, organizations can maximize the benefit from their improvement efforts. Lean Six Sigma can be viewed from both a strategic and a tactical perspective. † (Lawson, 2007). Global Trends of Lean Six Sigma In the current situation the entire world is in economically, the trend for Lean Six Sigma may be necessary for all organizations to implement. Across the globe, many countries are experiencing the effect of a global recession. According to Ghosh, â€Å"With increased availability of innovative technology and enhancements, more and more measurements are being put in place to understand, monitor and control processes. As we know what we cannot measure we cannot improve. Available data for processes will encourage predictive modeling tools under the umbrella of Lean and Six Sigma tools. This will enable organizations to become more proactive and help with prevention and improved response times. The lead time of implementation of Lean and Six Sigma projects will also be on a downward trend as a result of easier measurements with technology advancements, greater affordability and the evolution of Web 2. 0 tools to drive productivity and efficiency† (Ghosh, 2009). Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT) â€Å"The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency of the US government implemented a partnership with private companies after the events of 9/11 to help protect the supply chain. Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT) was launched in November 2001, with just seven major importing companies. Currently over 7,400 companies in the global supply chain are enrolled in the program, including importers, customs brokers, terminal operators, carriers and foreign manufacturers. CBP’s C-STAT strategy is based on five goals† (Murray, 2011). These goals are ensure that C-TPAT partners improve the security of their supply chains pursuant to C-TPAT security criteria, provide incentives and benefits to include expedited processing of C-TPAT shipments to C-TPAT partners, internationalize the core principles of C-TPAT through cooperation and coordination with the international community, support other CBP security and facilitation initiatives, and improve administration of the C-TPAT program. The first goal signifies that profiles and information is secure. Terror threats against all ports of the globe are at an all-time high. The second goal of the Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism enacted security assessment programs and training for all. This will ensure that all personnel are knowledgeable and are properly trained in order to detect such terrorist threats. The third goal is communication. According to Murray, â€Å"Partnering with the international trade community to help secure global supply chains and partnering with individual customs administrations will improve the coordination of mutual anti-terrorism efforts. Supporting the work of the World Customs Organization (WCO) to develop a WCO sponsored framework to secure and facilitate global trade that recognizes customs-private sector partnerships, and coordinate with international organizations to improve the security and integrity requirements of their membership† (Murray, 2011). The fourth goal will expand the Free and Secure Trade Program which will enable authorities to enhance the security of Container Security initiative while helping Homeland Security with antiterrorism programs and development. Global Trends of Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT) As international trade continues to expand, the global supply chain remains even more vulnerable to security threats. Despite efforts by importers and other supply chain participants to improve security, the danger of a terrorist attack involving the international transportation system remains high. Companies have also become aware of the vulnerability of its supply chains to an ever-increasing range of security threats and disruptions. While participation in the program has increased, and CBP continues to roll out minimum-security criteria covering new business types, a key category has yet to be incorporated into the program – third-party logistics providers (3PLs). While U. S. Customs and Border Protection has announced that security criteria covering 3PLs will be incorporated into the C-TPAT program sometime this year, it is unclear how they will develop a common definition for service providers in the o utsourced logistics sector (Anderson, 2008). The global trends of Lean Six Sigma and Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism will be a significant part of the future of business. Combining the powers of Lean manufacturing with the essential tactics and strategies of Six Sigma will lower costs for corporations and increase competitive strategy. Forecasting methods, with Lean Six Sigma, will provide businesses the opportunity to enhance the skills they desire and be prepared. Lean Six Sigma will teach companies how to structure their operations to monitor data at the right places and times throughout the process in order to identify issues that need improvement before they become serious problems. A pro-active approach can save time, money and best of all improve customer satisfaction and product reliability. Supply chains are in danger of terror threats. Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism is enhancing their service by combining five different goals to comply with securing the ports of entry. C-TPAT is voluntary at this time, but before long, this may change. C-TPAT will soon require mandatory participation. A major challenge of global trade is navigating customs requirements, and the complexities and processes that accompany shipping around the world among a company’s locations and with outsourcing partners. New security and compliance initiatives, trade agreements, customs regulations, duty rates, and import and export processes can make it more difficult than ever to conduct international trade. All countries and organizations should work together to create a terrorist free environment to enhance the global economy and protect the supply and value chain. References Ghosh, M. (2009). Easy French Vocabulary Lesson On the Phone

The world of the telephone has its own special vocabulary. When making or receiving phone calls in French, you will want to know some useful phrases. This quick French lesson will help you understand and speak to anyone. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to begin a phone conversation and understand common nouns and verbs associated with making a phone call. It is a useful lesson for travelers as well as those who do business with people in French-speaking countries. A Polite Request Makes the Conversation Easier It is important to remember that people tend to speak fast in their native language. If you are on the phone with a native French speaker and you cannot catch everything that  they are saying, politely ask them to slow down:   Pouvez-vous sil vous plaà ®t parler plus lentement ? (Can you please speak slower?) You should do the same should the conversation turn to English. Common Phone Phrases Every phone call has to begin somewhere, no matter what the subject is. Whether you reach the person directly or need to go through a receptionist, these phrases will be very helpful when you make the call. In the very least, you can begin the conversation in French and switch to English if the person on the other end knows it. Hello? Allà ´ ? May I speak to ____? Pourrais-je parler à   ___ ? I'd like to speak to ____. Je voudrais parler à   ___. Who is calling? C'est de la part de qui ? or Qui est à   l'appareil ? ____ is calling. C'est de la part de ___. or C'est ___ à   l'appareil. Please hold. Ne quittez pas. I'm transferring your call. Je vous le passe. The line is busy. La ligne est occupà ©e. French Nouns Associated With Phones As you learn more French, you will find that these simple nouns are very  useful. They are all associated with phone calls and, as you can see, many are very similar to the English word. This should be an easy set of vocabulary to memorize and you can practice every time you use a phone.
